The story is told that three bricklayers working on a church construction project were asked to describe what they were doing. The first responded, “I am laying bricks.” The second said, “I am building a church.” The third smiled and said, “I am building the house of God.”
Psychologist Angela Duckworth, known for her research on the power of "grit"— the unique pairing of passion and perseverance — says, “The first bricklayer just has a job. The second may have a career, but the third has a calling.”
Stephen Cheung, President and CEO of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), and Ron Frierson, Director of Economic Development of the Western U.S. at Amazon and the newly appointed Chairman of the LAEDC Board of Governors, have much in common with the third bricklayer. Their vision for a unified region rooted in economic prosperity for all people inspires what can only be described as a calling. They embody Duckworth’s definition of “grit” to address extreme challenges facing Los Angeles County in pursuit of a plentiful and just future for all Angelenos. Read the full Article
